Artistic Expression in the City Centre
Lethbridge Community Arts Centre, Lethbridge, AB
The Lethbridge Community Arts Centre will be a focal point for the arts community in Downtown Lethbridge. The Centre will showcase local artists through the exhibition gallery and serve as a collaborative home for Lethbridge area arts groups.
The 33, 000 sq.ft. facility will replace the aging Bowman Arts Centre. It will be home to classrooms, meeting spaces, a dance studio, 2-D & 3-D studios for clay and sculpture, drawing, painting, print making, and textiles, and a community space for theatre, music, and dance rehearsal. The University of Lethbridge’s Conservatory of Music will also take up a portion of the building for offices, practice and recital space.
The Centre will be located on the east side of the old downtown IGA site, between 2nd & 3rd Avenue South and 7th & 8th Street. The base structure of the building will be comprised of concrete construction up to and including the 2nd floor, with wood (timber & glulam) structure continuing to and including the roof. The architectural vision is to have the structure and mechanical and electrical services exposed - creating the need for a highly collaborative design process. Acoustical requirements to isolate the music practice rooms from each other, and the rest of the space, also required in depth planning and coordination between all consultants.
