John Harder

BSc, MEng, P.Eng. | Principal
As the Managing Principal of RJC Calgary’s Building Science and Restoration team, John has been involved in over 600 existing facility evaluation and restoration contracts over the past 35 years, including over 350 post-tensioned structures. His current responsibilities include evaluation of existing buildings and parking structures, coordination of test/monitoring programs and administration of restoration/waterproofing contracts.

Providing continuing base building engineering services for over 20 million square feet of existing buildings allows John and his team to closely track and predict useful lives of building components, prioritize maintenance programs and assist clients with expenditure planning.

As a recognized authority on post-tensioning systems, John is an advisor to the City of Calgary Building Regulations and Assessment Departments on the safety and economic impact of corrosion in post-tensioned structures. He was a recipient of a Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) External Research Grant on an Investigation Protocol for Evaluation of Post-Tensioned Buildings, which included surveys for the real estate and engineering industries in Canada. John also engaged with the University of Alberta on a joint research program to assess reliability of PT strand tension testing, evaluating alternative means of assessment and variables affecting testing procedures. He has authored numerous articles on the durability and maintenance of structures.

John obtained his Bachelor and Master’s degrees from the University of Alberta.
