Douglas Watts

P.Eng., Architect AIBC, CP, LEED® AP, FEC | Principal

Doug has over 40 years of experience in both architecture and engineering and is a respected authority in building science in Canada. Doug is the immediate Past Chair of the National Building Code Standing Committee on Environmental Separation. He has contributed to advances in his field through code committees, research, and as a university lecturer.

He provides technical leadership in our Vancouver Building Science practice; in the investigation and assessment of existing building enclosures, the management of enclosure retrofits, and consulting with architects on enclosure design for new construction projects. He provides meaningful input into all of his projects, resolving problems with appropriate solutions. Doug’s current work includes enclosure consulting for the MacLeod Electrical Engineering Building renewal at UBC, the enclosure design for a new Residential tower and Academic building at the New Westminster campus of Douglas College, and the re-glazing of the Atrium at the HSBC building in downtown Vancouver.

Doug graduated with an engineering degree from the University of British Columbia, starting his career doing structural design at RJC before he went on to earn his Masters of Architecture at the University of Washington. He completed the AIBC Building Envelope Education Program, and the UBC Architecture and Engineering Building Code and Certified Professional Course. Doug was recognized for his substantial and continuing contributions in the industry when he was awarded a Professional Service Award from APEGBC, and was named a Fellow of Engineers Canada. Doug worked in prestigious engineering and architectural firms, as a university lecturer in research, and as a building envelope specialist for the City of Vancouver, prior to re-joining RJC.
