As one of the four new recreation centres in Calgary, the Brookfield Residential YMCA at Seton is currently under construction and will have an anticipated completion date of early 2019. The 330,000 sq. ft. facility in the city’s southeast will service surrounding communities and house amenities including two ice rinks, three gymnasiums, multi-purpose meeting and conference rooms, studio and theatre space, a full service Calgary Public Library branch and multiple sport and leisure pools.
This new long-span facility is set to be Calgary’s largest recreational centre. As structural engineer, RJC was instrumental in initiating and coordinating the geotechnical aspects to revise initial pile supported foundation, to a spread footing foundation, which saved almost $3M. The impressive skylight is a notable feature of the facility and where 3D Revit modelling was essential for its success. The unique design provides ample natural light through the undulating, irregular roof and triangulated architecturally exposed structural steel. In addition to the amenities and aesthetics of the facility, the project team utilized leading-edge design in the competition pool with a Myrtha system – an exclusive and technologically advanced stainless steel panel and edge modular system, as opposed to cast-in-place concrete.
