RJC Engineers was engaged to assist the City of Belleville in developing schematic design options for the replacement of a heavily deteriorated cast-in-place concrete, two-span pedestrian bridge. The bridge stretches between Coleman Street and the Riverside parking lot west of Front Street and serves as an important link for walkers and cyclists between downtown and the West Hill neighbourhood. It is also the only Moira River crossing between Bridge Street and Station Street. Key requirements of the redevelopment of the pedestrian bridge for the City included the integration with the style of nearby vehicle bridges, improved lighting and enhanced landscaping elements. A viewing platform part way across the bridge, along with long-term durability and ease-of-maintenance, were also key in the development of the design options.
