The new Lake District Hospital and Health Centre was built to replace the old facility in the northern community of Burns Lake, BC. The new facility provides acute care, emergency services, diagnostic imaging, a laboratory and a pharmacy. The project’s successful collaboration brought together medical and health services from the surrounding district under one roof. Sustainable elements were a major focus for this project. In response to the local climate, exterior insulated walls with metal cladding on thermally broken girts ensured thermal performance and low maintenance during the service life of the building. Curtain wall glazing was used in the public areas to permit large areas of glazing overlooking the spectacular views from the site. Glulam columns and beams brought visual warmth to the building and reflected the basis of the local economy.
This project is targeting LEED Gold certification.
