One of four new recreational facilities in Calgary, the Remington YMCA in Quarry Park opened in 2016. Previously an industrial area, Quarry Park is quickly becoming a bustling urban hub in the city’s southwest. The new 94,000 sq. ft. recreation center has become a welcome addition to the community and surrounding areas, contributing to health, wellness, leisure and cultural community connections.

The indoor amenities include leisure and competition swimming pools, a multi-purpose gymnasium and running track, fitness area, studio spaces, full-service Calgary Public Library branch and daycare and childminding services. The facility’s goal of being a fully-inclusive and well-connected environment; unlike most recreational and wellness facilities, was realized as the Remington YMCA integrates all activities from one central point in the building’s interior.

The project team utilized timber throughout the facility, efficiently reducing the amount of carbon impacts on the environment, while adding structural and aesthetic purpose. In order to support the long-span spaces, while offering a beautiful architectural finish, glue laminated beams were chosen to run the entire length of the facility.  The project is LEED Gold certified.
