This project includes the construction of a new 172-bed, seven storey patient-care tower, modern emergency department, intensive care unit and significant renovations to the existing space.

Among the features is an expanded and renovated diagnostic imaging and medical diagnostics area, larger operating rooms and a new post-anesthetic care unit, a new main entrance, as well as expanded ambulatory care area, cancer clinic, and intensive care unit.

There also will be an expanded, modernized laboratory.

Planning and design-wise, floor to floor heights were selected very carefully to achieve appropriate matching at certain levels to the existing hospital.

Also, a stairwell was designed at the intersection of the old and new buildings with an opening to all levels, providing a connection between all levels of the old and new buildings.Construction-wise, the foundations were designed to allow construction adjacent to the existing building.

Working with the caisson trade, RJC designed caissons and grade beams with appropriate allowances for the drill rig to access tight spaces against the existing building.
