As a part of the Vancouver School Board's seismic upgrade program, Jules Quesnel Elementary School’s main building block, built in 1926, underwent a complete seismic upgrade.

The old gymnasium block had to be replaced as seismic upgrading was not deemed to be a viable option.

The upgrade included adding new shear walls to the exterior of the building.

Existing floors were upgraded for diaphragm and drag strut demands.

The existing gymnasium was replaced with a new gymnasium and a multi-purposed space which were designed to ‘high importance’ building code.

The accessibility and functionality of the building was also improved by adding a new elevator, improving administrative and staff spaces as well as adding additional learning and resource space.
