Shawnigan Lake School - Main Building
The Shawnigan Lake School Main Building Redevelopment consists of renovations and seismic upgrades to the original schoolhouse building, demolition and reconstruction of the Great Hall and a new library building constructed of heavy timber.
The $18 million project used wood as the primary structural material, for each of the unique systems in the building, resulting in a cost-effective structure which met the project budgets and timeline.
The strength and ductility of wood shear-walls was optimized for the distributed array of wood-frame shear-walls which limit the impact on the building layout and reduced reaction forces at the foundations.
The durability and patina of the exposed heavy timber framing in the original building was echoed in the timber framing of the new library with exposed architectural joinery.
New student spaces reflect the warmth and comfort of the original building with wood celebrated for its structural capacity and form, and for the warmth and beauty of the material.
