RJC Engineers Canada’s tallest building outside Toronto

RJC Engineers is leading structural work on M3, a condo tower in Mississauga, Ont., that will be Canada’s tallest building outside Toronto, with 83 storeys stretching 258 m from the ground.
To meet the challenges of the building’s scale, RJC is implementing advanced strategies for wind performance, podium integration and construction sequencing. As designed by IBI Group (now Arcadis), the tapered tower will lean significantly, with its northwest corner cutting back 14 m.
According to RJC, the lean will be “accentuated by clear glazing wrapped in sawtooth balconies, paired with zig-zagging black and white banding.” And to address the site’s high wind conditions, the building will incorporate a 750-tonne tuned mass damper (TMD), one of the largest in Canada.
When completed, M3 will feature 900 residential units, seven levels of below-grade parking, a swimming pool, a gymnasium and retail space. With EllisDon serving as construction contractor, it represents the newest addition to Mississauga’s master-planned M City high-rise condo community.
