The Jeanne & Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre is located on the University of Alberta’s Augustana campus in Camrose, AB.

The Performing Arts Centre is a 44,200 sq. ft. facility consisting of 550 seats on two-sloped floor levels (main floor and balcony) and a main performance chamber with ancillary spaces.

The 2,700 sq. ft. stage area is comprised of a main stage with dual wing spaces and a 70-foot fly tower.

At approximately 22 meters in height, the theatre’s Fly Tower element represented a major challenge to the designers.

To maintain structural member sizes minimized to fit within the theatre designer’s wall system, a ‘two-way’ framing system was incorporated on the west wall of the fly tower. The system utilized vertical columns and horizontal beams to share lateral wind loading between these two member types and reduce overall member sizing and structural steel quantities.

Requiring over 500 tons of structural steel, the Performing Arts Theatre employed structural steel as an economic and reliable material for delivering a project that needed simple solutions for its structural challenges.
