McKnight Blvd. Pedestrian Bridge Rehabilitation

This pedestrian bridge over McKnight Blvd in northeast Calgary was in need of significant repair to maintain public safety and to improve the function of the crossing.

The lightweight steel truss structure was approaching 50 years old and exhibited significant deterioration of steel elements and the concrete deck.

The bridge also did not meet current accessibility expectations due to the narrow walkway width and steep ramps.

Recognizing the value of the existing structure, RJC worked with The City to develop sustainable rehabilitation strategies that sought to “reuse” rather than “replace” wherever possible.

Project scope and solutions were focused on a minimum intervention basis intended to extend the service life of the crossing while reducing material waste.

This project brought social benefit through improved appearance, public confidence and engagement with the local community.
