In Canada’s quest to ensure that athletes have access to world class facilities, WinSport Canada developed the Markin MacPhail Centre located in the west lands of Canada Olympic Park in Calgary.

The development includes a number of existing and future components including the Athletics and Ice Complex, which is at the core of an exciting master plan and provides a centralized location for athletes to train and learn. The 5-storey office tower provides office space for the head offices of nearly twenty national and provincial winter sports organizations including Hockey Canada, WinSport Canada and other national and provincial winter sport organizations.

The landmark facility includes a 2,500 seat olympic-sized ice surface, three NHL-sized ice surfaces, a high-performance fitness centre and leading technical and research services.

The structural framing used for this world class facility includes glulam beams, exposed precast, and steel framing.

Each was selected and used in specific locations to help achieve the strong structural expression envisioned by the Architect. The roof over the main rink features gracefully curved glulam beams spanning 48m over the seating bowl. These in turn are supported on tapered precast columns that, in addition to supporting the roof, also provide lateral resistance.

The same glulam and precast treatment is reflected over the running track that connects the Olympic Rink to the High Performance Fitness Centre.
